Beasiswa S2&S3 Australia - MA/PhD Scholarship: University of Melbourne, Australia

MA/PhD Scholarship: University of Melbourne, Australia
‘Egalitarianism’

The Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics (CAPPE) is offering an MA or
PhD scholarship for study at the University of Melbourne commencing in 2006. The
Scholarship is part of a research project funded by the Australian Research Council
entitled, ‘Reassessing Egalitarianism’ awarded to Dr Jeremy Moss (University of
Melbourne) and Dr Robert Young (La Trobe University).

Research Proposal

Project description: The issues of egalitarianism and equality are central to political
philosophy and contemporary democracy. This project will undertake a systematic
examination of debates within contemporary egalitarianism. It will assess the key
problems in current debates: the role of individual responsibility in determining
compensation for disadvantage; whether egalitarianism is guided by an ideal of
respect or fairness; whether egalitarianism should endorse principles of ‘priority’ or
‘equality’ and egalitarianism’s relation to desert. The Investigators will also develop
an independent version of egalitarianism and address issues concerning how key
classes of disadvantaged individuals — the unemployed and health patients — are
affected by egalitarianism.

The research proposal for the MA or PhD may draw on a wide variety of topics
related to egalitarian political philosophy.
